Big River at the Galveston Island Musicals - July 26, 2007
Thirty-nine members and guests thoroughly enjoyed an evening in
Galveston at the Galveston Island Musicals on July 26. After a nice dinner at Luby's Cafeteria, we proceeded to the
Galveston Convention Center at the San Luis Resort where Roger Miller's "Big River" in two acts was staged. Adapted
from the novel by Mark Twain, we follow narrator Huckleberry "Huck" Finn and a befriended runaway slave, Jim, down the
Ohio in their mischievous adventures with strangers ('King & Duke') and close friend (Tom Sawyer) before a very
gratifying ending. Eighteen marvelous songs were sung with passion and interlaced into the play. In the lobby after
the play, we congratulated the costumed cast in their standard receiving line. A group picture taken by president
Ralph Garcia on the steps of the Convention Center closed out the activities.
